about
Olivia Wargo looks to the natural world as the ultimate source of inspiration for her drawings and paintings. Influenced by the Transcendental Painting Group in New Mexico and the Abstract Expressionism Movement in New York, Wargo merges the impulses of representational and abstract painting to depict scenes filled with vivid colors and shifting compositions. She engages with motifs such as plants, flowers, mountains, and skies in order to understand and mimic the vocabulary of nature, while allowing her own dream-like associations and memories to influence their depictions. In paintings that oscillate between the real and the imaginary, Wargo insists on the emotional and aesthetic importance of the landscape.
In the past few years, Wargo has spent extensive time traveling in the western United States visiting family in Los Angeles, CA and Galisteo, NM. During her travels, she takes photographs and makes en plein air water colors which she uses as source material for her oil paintings.
Olivia Wargo lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. Wargo received her B.A in Studio Arts from Hampshire College.
